It usually is not lighted, so it must absorb rather than reflect the light when it is.
Furthermore, it must have blackout capabilities, which act as a barrier to any light shining behind it (scene lights and lights of the service areas). It’s commonly made of black textiles that need to be darkening and light-absorbing.
